LAGOS — Veteran journalist, cleric, and editorial board member of The Nation newspaper, Revd Mobolade Adeboyejo Omonijo, has passed away at the age of 63 following a brief illness.
The news of his death on October 15 was confirmed in a statement issued by his son, Adeolu, on behalf of the family.
Until his passing, Revd Omonijo served as the Vicar of the Church of Pentecost, Dopemu, Lagos, in the Diocese of Lagos West. A graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), his media career spanned nearly four decades, during which he worked with The Economist, Vanguard, and notably The Nation, where he served as Group Political Editor before joining the newspaper’s Editorial Board in 2008.
Paying tribute to the deceased, the Chairman of The Nation Editorial Board, Sam Omatseye, described Omonijo as a thorough, unsparing reporter and a balanced commentator who brought critical rigor and sobriety to editorial deliberations. Omatseye noted that despite his health challenges, Omonijo remained deeply committed to his craft, attending an editorial board meeting just a week prior to his death.
The family announced that funeral arrangements and burial details will be communicated to the public in due course.
