Sanwo-Olu Orders LAWMA MD Olumuyiwa Gbadegesin to Resign Over Escalating Lagos Waste Crisis

LAGOS — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reportedly ordered the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, to resign from his position following mounting public outcry over the state’s worsening waste crisis.

The directive comes after months of growing public frustration, resident complaints, and environmental hazards caused by uncollected refuse and illegal dumpsites overflowing across key road corridors and residential communities across the metropolis.

Gbadegesin, who was reappointed by Governor Sanwo-Olu to head the waste management agency following the governor’s re-election, has faced intense pressure over operational delays, infrastructure deficits at primary landfill sites like Olusosun, and lingering disputes involving Private Sector Participant (PSP) waste operators.

Despite recent enforcement drives and claims by the agency that it resolved over 1,200 public complaints in the third quarter of 2026, severe bottlenecks in refuse evacuation continued to paralyze waste collection efforts across major local government areas.

Government sources indicate that the executive order forms part of a broader emergency restructuring plan by the Sanwo-Olu administration to overhaul LAWMA, clear backlogs, and restore environmental sanitation standards across the state.
