ABUJA — Organised Labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), has threatened to embark on nationwide industrial action over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to address pressing economic hardships and unfulfilled commitments.
The threat comes as the 14-day ultimatum issued by the labour unions on October 9 nears its expiration on Friday, October 23.
Among the core demands submitted by the unions are an immediate reduction in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to cushion severe living costs, urgent measures to stabilize the Naira, the implementation of tax reliefs for low-income earners, and the immediate commencement of talks to adjust public-sector welfare packages amid soaring inflation.
In an effort to avert a complete shutdown of economic activities, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment summoned the leadership of the NLC and TUC to a mandatory conciliation meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 22, in Abuja.
However, union officials maintained that unless the government presents concrete, verifiable solutions rather than vague promises, industrial actions will proceed across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
