FG Commissions Four Power Substations, Adds 544MW to Kano Electricity Grid

KANO — The Federal Government, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and in partnership with the Kano State Government, has commissioned four transmission substations, boosting Kano State’s electricity grid capacity by 544 megawatts.

The newly commissioned substations are located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi.

The breakdown of the new installations includes a brand-new 80MW-capacity substation with two 40MVA transformers at Walalambe, while Kumbotso received 300MVA capacity at the 330kV level alongside 100MVA transformers. In addition, the Dakata and Dan-Agundi substations were each upgraded with an additional 100MVA transformer at the 132kV level.

The commissioning ceremony was led by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, alongside the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mahmuda Mamman, TCN Managing Director Engr. Sule Abdulaziz, and senior officials from the Kano State Ministry of Energy.

Speaking on the impact of the projects, officials noted that the expanded capacity will significantly strengthen bulk electricity transmission across Kano’s key commercial, industrial, and residential hubs.

Specifically, six outgoing feeders from the Walalambe substation will supply power directly to the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road, and surrounding communities. Meanwhile, the restored and upgraded Dan-Agundi facility—which previously suffered fire damage—will deliver stabilized power to Kano’s ancient city center, the Emir’s Palace, and neighboring districts.

The Ministry of Power highlighted that the projects reflect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s drive to expand national grid infrastructure, relieve overloaded substations, and unlock economic growth across industrial corridors.
