ABUJA — Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has demanded the immediate publication of the preliminary voters’ register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The demand was contained in an official statement released on Thursday by Phrank Shaibu, Director of Strategic Communication of the campaign council.
Atiku questioned the absence of the register from INEC’s online display portal during the designated October 9 to 15 scrutiny window, warning that failing to open the database of over 103 million registered voters to public verification undermines the credibility of the upcoming elections.
The former vice president expressed concern over conflicting statements surrounding the display timeline, pointing out that the public cannot be denied the statutory right to inspect entries, correct omissions, and challenge false registrations prior to election day.
Atiku also faulted INEC for failing to disclose the identities of vendors and contractors awarded contracts to print sensitive election materials, calling on President Bola Tinubu, international observers, and democratic institutions to urge the electoral body to ensure full operational transparency.
Urging INEC to publish the complete voter breakdown across all local government areas and wards, Atiku asserted that transparency before the ballot is just as crucial as scrutiny of the final results, warning that any attempt to withhold public access to the register will be challenged through open and lawful channels.
