Why you should stop sending money home – Peter Obi engages Nigerians in UK

LONDON — The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has advised Nigerians residing in the United Kingdom and across the diaspora to temporarily stop sending financial bailouts to relatives at home to compel citizens to hold bad leaders accountable.

Speaking during an interactive summit with diaspora supporters and Nigerian students in London, Obi argued that continuous cash transfers mask the severe economic crisis facing the country and enable political leaders to evade accountability.

Addressing the audience, the former Anambra State governor urged members of the diaspora to refuse constant financial requests from family members, asserting that citizens back home must feel the full impact of bad governance to demand structural reforms.

Obi stated that continuous diaspora remittances serve as a temporary cushion that lulls the electorate into complacency, allowing corrupt leadership to persist without public resistance. He urged Nigerians overseas to pivot their support toward systemic political change and long-term economic empowerment rather than short-term consumption subsidies.
