ABUJA — Eight public sector trade unions under the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), supported by the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), have resolved to commence a three-day nationwide warning strike beginning Thursday, October 2, 2026, following the expiration of their ultimatum to the Federal Government over continuous petrol price increases.
The labor coalition disclosed that the impending industrial action stems from unaddressed socio-economic grievances, principally demanding an immediate reduction of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to $\text{N}500$ per liter through government-backed landing cost interventions.
In a statement issued ahead of the deadline, National Secretary Gbenga Olowoyo affirmed that Nigerian workers and their dependents can no longer absorb the relentless economic strain caused by deregulated fuel pricing and escalating transport tariffs.
Alongside fuel price concessions, the labor unions are demanding an immediate wage award to cushion inflation, a comprehensive review of federal public service salary structures, and the fast-tracking of national minimum wage implementation committees to avoid administrative delays.
Union leaders indicated that they will closely monitor President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled Independence Day broadcast on October 1 for concrete policy interventions, warning that failure to address their core demands will trigger a total shutdown of public administrative services nationwide starting October 2.
