Details of Closed-Door Strategy Session Between Power Minister and DisCos Emerge

ABUJA — Key operational details have emerged from a high-level, closed-door meeting between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and chief executives of electricity distribution companies (DisCos), focused on establishing dedicated 24-hour power supply corridors across critical economic clusters nationwide.

The meeting centered on the Federal Government’s newly conceived “24/7 Energy Zones” strategy, designed to guarantee uninterrupted electricity to industrial, commercial, and residential hubs starting with high-demand corridors: the Lagos axis, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano, and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

Speaking in a statement issued following the technical session, Minister Tegbe disclosed that structural bottlenecks in the power sector extend beyond generation capacity and transmission grid instability to serious operational deficiencies at the distribution end.

He highlighted that poor inter-agency coordination and distribution off-take failures have severely hindered the delivery of steady power, noting that the new energy zones framework will hold DisCos directly accountable for off-taking available power and maintaining feeder line efficiency.

The Ministry of Power and the electricity distribution companies agreed to align metering expansion, targeted infrastructure upgrades, and localized gas-to-power interventions to ensure the priority zones achieve sustained 24-hour supply within designated timeframes.
