BONNY — Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has strongly defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic policies, declaring that the removal of the petrol subsidy was the long-overdue, courageous decision required to secure Nigeria’s economic future.
Speaking on Saturday during a town hall meeting with Rainbow Coalition stakeholders in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, the former governor argued that previous administrations acknowledged the subsidy regime was fraudulent and unsustainable, yet lacked the political courage to dismantle it due to fear of backlash.
Wike maintained that the policy shift has significantly boosted monthly revenues shared among federal, state, and local governments, empowering state governors with unprecedented financial capacity to execute infrastructure and developmental projects without resorting to commercial loans.
Addressing concerns over the current cost of living, Wike acknowledged the immediate hardship faced by citizens but assured that commodity prices would stabilize as structural reforms take firm root.
He cited the completion of the long-abandoned Bodo-Bonny Road under the present administration as concrete proof of President Tinubu’s commitment to the Niger Delta, contrasting it with past unfulfilled political promises.
Calling on the people of Bonny and Rivers State to support President Tinubu for a second term in 2027, Wike stated that leadership should be evaluated on performance and structural results rather than sentiment or unviable opposition rhetoric.
