The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) is poised to project Nigeria as an attractive investment destination at the Network of African Data Protection Authorities’ conference (NADPA-RADPA) scheduled for May 2025.
Dr Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner/CEO, Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), said this at the inauguration of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) on Thursday in Abuja.
He recalled that during the 2024 conference, Nigeria was nominated to host the 2025 confab following its emergence in data protection in the continent.
He said that the committee comprised of members from the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy; Nigerian Communications Commission; Nigeria Postal Services; Nigeria Communications Satellite Limited and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Other members, Olatunji said, are from the World Bank, which was represented by Identity for Development Project Office (ID4D), the European Union, Google, Microsoft, office of the data protection commissioner in Kenya, among others.
“This event is the largest event in Africa’s data protection and privacy ecosystem and it is not about the ministry but about Nigeria.
“We will need you to work collaboratively and exchange ideas to bring the world to Nigeria and ensure the success of the event.
“Furthermore, it will be a crucial platform to showcase Nigeria as a peaceful, safe, and attractive investment destination.
“We must highlight Nigeria’s positive image and prove that Nigeria is a good and hospitable country,” Olatunji told the newly-inaugurated LOC members.
He commended the members on their willingness to collaborate with the commission for the success of the event.
He noted that Nigeria’s hosting of the NADPA-RADPA conference underscored the NDPC’s traction within a short period of its establishment.
The chief executive added that the hosting rights revealed the nation’s commitment to data protection and digital innovation on the global stage.
According to him, though we started later than some in the data protection and privacy ecosystem, we have already made significant strides, even at the global level.
The conference will be the 10th edition and is expected to gather delegates and participants from across Africa and beyond.
Participants expected include heads of data protection authorities, data protection experts, multinational corporations, development partners and foreign investors.
The NADPA-RADPA was established in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso in September 2016, and consists of 23 Data Protection Authorities and others with observer status from across Africa.
The objective of the network is to provide a platform for exchanges and cooperation among its members while amplifying Africa’s voice in global partnerships.
