In a dramatic turn of events, the Epe Local Government has announced the indefinite suspension of the installation of a new Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom, following a controversial dual installation that occurred on June 2, 2025.
The decision, conveyed in an official letter addressed to the Grand Chief Imam of Epe Division, was signed by the Executive Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. (Princess) Surah Olayemi Animashaun.
According to the letter, the recent installation exercise was declared “legally null and void” in the wake of the death of the immediate past Olu-Epe, Oba Shefiu Adewale. The council cited the ongoing dispute between two high-ranking chiefs—High Chief Adeniyi Kadri Odedeogboro and High Chief Iskilu Olajide Ikuforiji—both of whom have been laying claim to the throne and parading themselves as the rightful Olu-Epe.
“The two individuals are hereby suspended till further hearing from the authorities,” the letter stated.
Citing “unforeseen circumstances, security concerns, public health issues, and more,” the local government also cancelled this year’s Eid-al-Adha (Ileya) and Jumat services at the 1st Epe Central Mosque, Oke Balogun, and the Eid Ground on Eid Street, Oke Balogun, respectively.
The Executive Chairman assured that further updates would be communicated to the public as the situation develops.
This crisis threatens to deepen the chieftaincy dispute in Epe Kingdom and has raised concerns about peace and order in the community as the festive period approaches.
