Atiku Urges Tinubu to Adopt His Energy Reforms to Slash Petrol Prices

ABUJA — Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to put aside political pride and adopt his long-proposed economic and energy policy templates to crash rising fuel prices across the country.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, September 18, 2026, amidst growing public outcry over Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) prices reaching ₦1,500 per litre, Atiku stated that he does not care who takes political credit, provided the government takes actionable steps to alleviate the economic hardship facing Nigerian households.

Atiku argued that the current administration’s execution of fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification was managed haphazardly without adequate structural buffers, causing severe inflation, currency devaluation, and energy poverty.

“I don’t care if President Tinubu takes my ideas and claims full credit for them—what matters is that Nigerians are hurting and fuel prices must come down,” Atiku asserted. “Governance is not about political ego; it is about results. If adopting our economic framework brings petrol back to an affordable level and stabilizes our currency, let them take the praise while the people get relief.”
