‘Unwavering Patriotism and Humility’: Lai Mohammed Pays Glowing Tribute to Late President Buhari at One-Year Memorial

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has paid a deeply emotional tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a rare, exemplary leader whose legacy is defined not by the public offices he held, but by his absolute integrity, patriotism, and profound compassion.

Speaking in Abuja during a national remembrance event marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing, Lai Mohammed reflected on his nearly eight years serving as the official spokesperson for the Buhari administration. He emphasized that working closely with the late president was one of the greatest privileges of his life, praising Buhari’s unique style of leadership which was built on absolute trust and confidence in his subordinates.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Head of Strategic Communication in the Lai Mohammed Media Office, Nnamdi Atupulazi, the former minister urged political leaders and citizens to emulate the values that the late statesman represented.

“President Buhari’s life was defined not merely by the many positions he occupied but by the values he represented,” Lai Mohammed remarked. Beyond his impressive military and political credentials were the qualities that truly distinguished him: his unwavering patriotism, unquestionable integrity, disarming humility, honesty, and, above all, his profound humanity.”

He added that Buhari’s trust in those who worked under him was exemplary. “He trusted those who served him, cared deeply about their welfare, and led by personal example. Those are qualities that will remain his enduring legacy,” the former minister said.

Mohammed also recalled how his admiration for Buhari predated their official government ties, pointing out that in 2012, Buhari had graciously written the foreword to his book, Witness to History, and was the very first guest to arrive at the Lagos book launch, waiting for over an hour before the event officially commenced. He noted that their close bond continued long after they left public office in 2023, characterized by regular personal visits to Buhari’s country homes in Daura and Kaduna.

The one-year anniversary event, which brought together family, political associates, diplomats, and former cabinet members in the nation’s capital, served as a solemn occasion to reflect on the life of service, discipline, and dedication to nation-building that defined the late leader’s journey.
