LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has approved the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other unions in the state-owned universities, including the payment of 40 per cent CATA and 10 per cent EAA for academic staff and 35 per cent revised allowances for non-academic staff.
The approval, conveyed in a letter dated October 7, 2026, and signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr Tolani Sule, followed recent engagements between the unions and the state government.
Under the agreement, the Readers’ and Professors’ monthly allowances for academic staff will be adopted at N70,000 and N145,000 respectively.
The approved allowances are to take effect from January 1, 2026, with arrears to be paid in two tranches alongside the October and November 2026 salaries.
The government also approved the 35 per cent revised allowances for non-academic staff across Lagos State-owned tertiary institutions, effective from January 1, 2026.
According to the letter addressed to the ASUU leadership in Lagos State, all the approved allowances for the unions will be tax-free.
The state government said relevant government agencies had been directed to commence immediate implementation of the approval in line with existing financial regulations.
The Commissioner urged the union leadership to direct its members to suspend the ongoing strike and return to work immediately.
He also appealed to the workers to maintain industrial peace and demonstrate greater dedication to their duties, while appreciating the unions for their patience, maturity and understanding during the negotiations.
The approval covers the implementation and domestication of the ASUU/SSANU/NASU/NAAT agreement in Lagos State-owned universities.
