ASABA, NIGERIA — Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has revealed that his monthly official salary stands at N503,000, which is significantly lower than the N900,000 earned by Permanent Secretaries in the state civil service.
The governor made the remarks during the official commissioning of 12 four-bedroom terraced duplexes and the handover of 12 official operational vehicles to newly sworn-in Permanent Secretaries in Asaba, the state capital.
Context Behind the Salary Disparity
Governor Oborevwori explained that the state government adjusted the remuneration scale for top civil servants following complaints that directors were earning amounts nearly equal to Permanent Secretaries:
-
Permanent Secretaries: N900,000 monthly
-
Head of Service (HoS): N1,000,000 monthly
-
State Governor: N503,000 monthly
“When the Permanent Secretaries said most of the Directors are receiving almost the same thing with them, we increased their money. Today, Permanent Secretaries, your salary is N900,000; my salary is N503,000, Governor’s salary. Head of Service is N1 million.”
