The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), has strongly refuted allegations of a pre-arranged rigging plot ahead of the highly anticipated 2026 NBA National Officers’ Election scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2026.
He reassured members nationwide that the electoral framework remains completely independent and highly secure.
The assurance follows a week of intense drama, petitioning, and a dramatic intervention by the Department of State Services (DSS), which briefly detained the Managing Director of the association’s designated electronic election service provider.
Addressing an Emergency Virtual Meeting of the NBA National Executive Council (NEC) on Thursday, July 16, Osigwe maintained that the association’s leadership has no hand in the administration of the voting platform, which is under the exclusive control of the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA).
The DSS Intervention and Release
Tensions peaked within the legal community on Wednesday when operatives of the DSS reportedly took the head of the election’s IT service infrastructure into custody, raising fears of a deliberate state-sponsored attempt to hijack or postpone the legal body’s transition.
However, following a swift, unanimous vote by 127 NEC members to proceed with the election timetable regardless of external pressure, the DSS released the service provider late Thursday night.

Strict Safeguards Against Manipulation
To dispel rumors of digital manipulation and “backdoor voters,” the ECNBA, led by Chairman Aham Ejelam (SAN), outlined strict technical safeguards implemented for Saturday’s nationwide virtual ballot:

Multi-Factor Authentication: Every eligible legal practitioner on the final verified voters’ register must undergo a dual-layer authentication process using their unique Supreme Court Number (SCN) and a real-time One-Time Password (OTP) sent directly to their registered contact info.

Independent Auditing: Full collation, audit validation, and forensic security verification of all digital ballots will occur immediately after voting closes on Sunday, July 19, before any final result declaration is made.

Agent Monitoring: Accredited IT experts representing all competing presidential and national candidates are permitted inside the ECNBA Secretariat to monitor data traffic and transmission channels throughout the 24-hour voting window.
A Zero-Tolerance Stance on Monetization
Osigwe concluded by warning candidates against desperate, underhanded tactics, reiterating that the NBA must lead by example in national democratic integrity.
He stressed that any candidate or branch executive caught attempting to bypass the secure server, induce voters financially, or undermine the institutional independence of the Bar would face immediate disciplinary action before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC).
With the DSS backdown and the voters’ list fully verified, voting is officially set to open at midnight on Saturday, July 18, 2026, mapping out the next chapter of leadership for Africa’s largest bar association.
