PORT HARCOURT — Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has launched a scathing personal and political critique against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, attributing the passing of his elderly mother directly to the severe economic distress caused by current federal policies.
Speaking to supporters and media representatives in Port Harcourt on Friday, October 2, 2026, Amaechi shared the emotional personal account while evaluating the macroeconomic conditions, removing of fuel subsidies, and currency floatation policies under the present government.
The former minister alleged that hyperinflation, soaring healthcare overheads, and widespread economic hardship created an environment where accessing time-sensitive medical care became prohibitively difficult, ultimately contributing to his mother’s death.
Going beyond his personal loss, Amaechi challenged the administration’s economic direction, asserting that the prevailing policy framework has impoverished millions of Nigerians and eroded the purchasing power of middle- and low-income families nationwide.
The dramatic statement adds fuel to an already intense political climate following FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s earlier public challenge regarding Amaechi’s 24-year public service record, signaling a deepening rift among senior political figures in the South-South region.
