ABUJA — The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside his running mate and former Transportation Minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, drew large crowds at a retail petrol station in Abuja on Saturday, October 3, 2026, promising to fully restore fuel and electricity subsidies if elected in 2027.
The public appearance, which paralyzed commercial movement around the filling station, saw both opposition leaders engage directly with motorists, commercial drivers, and distressed commuters queuing for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).
Addressing the crowd, Amaechi reiterated that an Atiku-led administration would reverse key economic decisions implemented under the Tinubu presidency—specifically targeting fuel price dereglation and electricity Band tariff classifications—to lower consumer costs for petrol, food, and transport within its first year in office.
“Atiku sent me to tell you directly that he will bring back the fuel subsidy,” Amaechi declared to cheering bystanders. “When fuel prices come down, the cost of transportation, tomatoes, and food will drop immediately. We will also abolish the Band A and Band B electricity tariffs so ordinary Nigerians can breathe again.”
Highlighting the severe erosion of household purchasing power, Amaechi stated that the current economic trajectory has subjected millions of families to acute hardship, asserting that he would willingly withdraw as vice-presidential candidate and support the incumbent administration if petrol prices drop to $\text{N}600$ per liter under current policies.
The grassroots campaign stop signals an intensifying opposition offensive against the Federal Government’s economic reforms, positioning fuel price relief and social safety nets as central pillars of the ADC’s 2027 campaign strategy.
