LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has formally taken delivery of a new fleet of high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicle (EV) buses aimed at expanding clean mass transit options and lowering commuter fares across the metropolis.
The eco-friendly vehicles were officially received on behalf of the state government at the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Depot in Ketu under the Presidential Initiative on CNG and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV) and handed over to licensed operators regulated by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the vehicle deployment, emphasizing that integrating natural gas and electric power will drastically reduce operational dependency on expensive conventional fuels.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of LAMATA, Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed that the new batch brings the total count of CNG buses operating under the state’s regulated transit system to over 150 units.
Akinajo further revealed that under new transport regulatory mandates taking effect in 2026, LAMATA has officially ceased accepting new diesel-powered buses into the state’s regulated franchise network, obligating all public bus operators to progressively transition their fleets toward CNG and electric alternatives.
