In a move that has sent ripples through the political corridors of Alausa and the wider Lagos State, the Right Honourable Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has officially declared his intention to contest the Agege Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives come 2027.
The declaration, which took place yesterday at a packed stakeholders’ meeting in his native Agege, confirms months of speculation regarding the veteran lawmaker’s future. Obasa, who has served as the Speaker since June 2015—save for a brief, turbulent hiatus in early 2025—told cheering supporters that his decision was born out of a desire to provide “superior representation” for his people at the federal level.
A Legacy of Legislative Dominance
Since his first election to the State House of Assembly in 2007, Mudashiru Obasa has been a fixture of Lagos politics. His tenure as Speaker is historic, marked by the passage of landmark bills such as the Neighborhood Safety Corps Law and the recent controversial efforts to protect indigenous Lagosian interests.
However, his journey has not been without its storms. Only last year, in January 2025, Obasa faced a brief impeachment by fellow lawmakers over allegations of misconduct—a move that was eventually reversed in March 2025 following high-level interventions from party elders and the Presidency. His decision to now seek a seat in Abuja is seen by many as a calculated “graceful exit” from the state legislature, where he has reached the zenith of his influence.
The Agege Battleground
By entering the race for the Green Chamber, Obasa is effectively shaking up the internal dynamics of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Agege. Currently, the seat is held by Hon. Wale Hammed, whose future plans now remain the subject of intense speculation. Obasa’s entry is expected to consolidate his “Obasa Movement” into a formidable federal machine, though it also opens the door for a fierce succession battle in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Already, aspirants like Oluwagbenga Abiola have surfaced to claim the Agege Constituency I seat that Obasa will be vacating.
Addressing the crowd, Obasa stated: “I have served the state with all my heart for over two decades. It is time to take that experience, that legislative craft, and that unwavering commitment to the center. Agege deserves a voice in Abuja that cannot be ignored.
