A fire outbreak destroyed hundreds of shops and business centers at the popular Oranyan Market in Ibadan North East Local Government Area, Oyo State.

  • Timing & Origin: The inferno reportedly started around midnight. According to the Oyo State Fire Services, the fire originated in the middle of the market following an initial explosion before spreading to nearby stalls.

  • Affected Sections: Major sections of the market were affected, particularly shops housing gold dealers, furniture sellers, and secondhand clothing (Akube) retailers.

  • Scale of Damage: While state officials cautioned against placing an immediate official count before post-fire investigations conclude, local traders and eyewitnesses estimate that anywhere from 200 to nearly 300 shops were destroyed, resulting in millions of naira in lost inventory.
