The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) on Wednesday launched its ‘Catch-Them-Young’ multi-sports trials ahead of the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the trials aim to discover and nurture young athletes who will represent Lagos State at future national and international events.
Director-General of the Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, said the programme is designed to build a pipeline of champions from grassroots to elite competition.
He noted the trials began weeks ago and are ongoing at various sports facilities across the state, spanning several athletic disciplines.
These include track and field, swimming, gymnastics, deaf sports, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, football, chess, ayo and more.
Fatodu said athletes aged 9 to 14 from different parts of Lagos are participating in the multi-sports initiative.
Speaking at the track and field trial venue, Fatodu stressed the strategic importance of early talent discovery in sports development.
He said the ‘Catch-Them-Young’ programme shows the state’s dedication to uncovering raw talent from the grassroots.
According to him, every child in Lagos holds the potential to become a world champion through structured and inclusive trials.
He added that the initiative will prepare athletes for the Games and support a long-term development system for Lagos sports.
Fatodu also disclosed that LSSC is seeking partnerships with international sports bodies to enhance training and exposure for standout athletes.
He said training camps will be organised, with strict compliance to age eligibility rules to ensure fairness and integrity.
Fatodu added that while focusing on existing strengths, the Commission is also exploring emerging sports for broader representation.
