LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Lagos State Government has issued a firm directive prohibiting motorists and automobile dealers from using dealer registration plates as permanent or daily license plates on public roads.
In a statement released by the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, Bolanle Ogunlola, the government warned that operating vehicles with fake, obscured, unauthorized, or misuse of dealer plates violates state traffic regulations.
Key Regulatory Guidelines & Permitted Uses
Under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018, dealer registration plates are strictly limited to short-term, specific operational activities:

Authorized Test Drives: Short-distance testing for prospective vehicle buyers.

Vehicle Inspection & Servicing: Movement to and from testing stations or maintenance centers.

Transit & Delivery: Moving unregistered vehicles directly from sea ports or authorized dealer lots to designated sales premises.

Prohibited Practices: Routine private commuting, continuous operation on public roads, or retaining dealer plates on vehicles that have already been sold to private owners.
