The British government on Monday said it is considering additional sanctions against Iran in response to its drone and missile attacks on Israel.
British Foreign Minister David Cameron confirmed that the United Kingdom government would explore further sanctions, building upon the existing regime of 400 sanctions already in place.
Speaking with BBC, Cameron highlighted the effectiveness of recent sanctions, including those imposed on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, IRGC.
On whether the UK government would consider more sanctions against Iran, Cameron said: “Yes, absolutely. We already have 400 sanctions on Iran. We put in place a whole new sanctions regime at the end of last year, which is proving very effective.
“We’ve sanctioned the IRGC, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, in its entirety, and we’ll continue to look at what further steps we can do.”
He also said Britain would keep under review whether it should proscribe the IRGC.
Iran had sent a barrage of missiles and drones towards Israel on Saturday night in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on its embassy in the Syrian capital of Damascus that killed two senior members of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
None of the drones and missiles hit their targets.
