EFCC recovers over N1.25tr, secures 10,872 convictions in three-year sweep

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered ₦1,233,612,040,411.11 alongside $684,478,457.32 in foreign currency over the past 34 months, marking one of the most aggressive financial crime crackdowns in Nigeria’s history. Addressing journalists at the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja on August 31, 2026, Executive Chairman Ola Olukoyede delivered his three-year stewardship report, outlining a massive trail of convictions, asset forfeitures, and institutional reforms. Between October 2023 and July 2026, the commission received 49,673 petitions, investigated 39,615 cases representing 79.8% of petitions, and filed 14,476 cases in court representing 36.5% of investigations. Out of these court filings, the agency secured 10,872 convictions, achieving a 75.1% conviction-to-filing ratio.
Olukoyede declared that the commission’s responsibility is not merely to count arrests or announce recoveries, but to convert petitions into investigations, investigations into prosecutions, prosecutions into convictions, recoveries into restitution, and enforcement into measurable national value. The anti-graft agency emphasized that no office or political title shields individuals from prosecution. The commission’s active portfolio features 36 high-profile cases, including former state governors Yahaya Bello of Kogi, Darius Dickson Ishaku of Taraba, Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara, Theodore Ahamefule Orji of Abia, Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Chris Ngige of Anambra, Willie Obiano of Anambra, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, and Sule Lamido of Jigawa. Prominent ministers and federal officials under prosecution include former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, SAN, former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, former Power Minister Olu Agunloye, former Defence Minister Bello Mohammed, and former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq. The dragnet also extends to key figures in the financial and corporate sectors, including former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, former SunTrust Bank Managing Director Halima Buba, former Skye Bank Chairman Tunde Ayeni, and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore leader Bello Bodejo. Recent high-profile convictions secured by the Commission include Saleh Mamman, Robert Orya, and Chukwunyere Nwabuoku.
Regarding the distribution of funds, 33% of the recovered naira, amounting to ₦397.26 billion, went directly to the Federal Government, while 67%, totaling ₦836.34 billion, represented indirect recoveries returned to ministries, departments, state revenue services, private businesses, and individual victims. Overall, ₦661.32 billion and $492.37 million have already been released to rightful beneficiaries. Beyond liquid cash, the EFCC seized 10,053 tangible assets under interim and final forfeiture orders. This comprehensive inventory includes 8,198 electronic items, 1,177 real estate assets, 251 plots of land, 370 automobiles, 32 factories, schools, hotels, and shops, as well as 102 tonnes of forfeited solid minerals. Proceeds generated directly from property disposals added an extra ₦12.07 billion to the Federal Treasury.
Recovered proceeds of crime are actively funding national social development initiatives. Under presidential directives, ₦100 billion from recovered funds was allocated to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP). Additionally, a forfeited property formerly known as NOK University was transformed into the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State, which matriculated 1,909 students in December 2025. The EFCC’s aggressive crackdown on illegal foreign exchange operators—recording 234 Bureau De Change cases and 73 convictions—helped curb currency speculation. These enforcement efforts, alongside rigorous money laundering investigations, directly contributed to Nigeria’s official exit from the Financial Action Task Force Grey List in October 2025.
