Democracy Day: Protect Nigeria’s Freedom, Support Tinubu’s Reforms, APC Chair Urges Nigerians

ABUJA — The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to safeguard the nation’s democratic gains and support the ongoing reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the country’s long-term development and prosperity.
In a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday, Yilwatda congratulated Nigerians on the June 12 celebration and urged citizens to reflect on the significance of the date while recommitting themselves to the ideals of unity, patriotism, good governance and national development.
The APC chairman described June 12 as one of the most important milestones in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the courage and sacrifices of patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity and the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
“Democracy Day is not merely another public holiday; it is a solemn reminder of our collective struggle for freedom, representative government, and the right of every Nigerian to determine the destiny of our nation through democratic means,” he said.
According to him, the annual observance provides an opportunity for Nigerians to assess the nation’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to protecting institutions that sustain constitutional governance.
Yilwatda noted that democracy has created avenues for peaceful political participation, enhanced accountability, protection of fundamental rights and greater citizen involvement in nation-building.
He stressed that every generation has a responsibility to defend democracy and preserve the sacrifices made by those who fought for its entrenchment.
“The sacrifices made by our democratic heroes should never be forgotten, nor should we allow actions capable of undermining our constitutional order. Regardless of our political affiliations or differences, Nigeria’s democracy must remain stronger than individual ambitions or sectional interests,” he stated.
The APC national chairman called on political leaders, civil society organisations, the media, religious bodies, youth groups and other stakeholders to promote dialogue, tolerance, respect for the rule of law and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
He also urged Nigerians to continue supporting the economic and institutional reforms being implemented by the Tinubu administration, describing them as necessary measures aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable growth and development.
Yilwatda said the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda was designed to promote economic stability, infrastructure development, improved social welfare, increased investment opportunities and prosperity for future generations.
“While reforms may demand patience and sacrifice, history has consistently shown that courageous leadership and sound policy choices lay the foundation for lasting national progress,” he said.
The APC chairman maintained that ongoing reforms across key sectors of the economy were intended to strengthen public institutions, create jobs, improve the investment climate, expand business opportunities and build a more competitive and inclusive economy.
He appealed to Nigerians to remain hopeful, resilient and united in pursuit of a stronger nation, warning against division, violence, misinformation and actions capable of threatening democratic stability.
“Our greatest tribute to the heroes of June 12 is to preserve the democracy they fought for and work together to build a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria for generations yet unborn,” he added.
Yilwatda wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration and reaffirmed the APC’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and supporting policies aimed at advancing the progress and prosperity of the country.
