PORT HARCOURT, NIGERIA — Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, joined Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to officially commission the completed 33.5-kilometre Elele–Egbeda–Omoku Dual Carriageway.
The dual-carriageway project—which includes a 99-metre bridge—traverses three local government areas: Ikwerre, Emohua, and the oil-rich Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs.
Key Takeaways from the Commissioning Ceremony
-
Spreading Economic Opportunities: VP Shettima emphasized that good road networks serve as “the most democratic instruments of development,” noting that when infrastructure functions properly, it expands livelihoods and decentralizes economic growth.
-
Praise for Fubara’s Capital Projects: Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Shettima commended Governor Fubara for allocating public resources toward completing high-impact capital projects, describing the milestone as proof that governance is a continuous process across administrations.
-
Curbing Insecurity & Illegal Bunkering: Governor Fubara stated that fixing the formerly dilapidated transit corridor directly targets criminal activities, as the poor state of the previous road had enabled kidnapping and illegal oil bunkering operations in the area.
-
August Commissioning Blitz: The road inauguration forms part of a two-week project commissioning series rolled out by the Rivers State Government running through August 31, 2026, covering roads, healthcare, aviation infrastructure, and education facilities state-wide.
