The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, has restated the commitment of the legislature to restore public trust in Nigeria’s justice delivery system.
Kalu said this while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) led by the President, Mr, Afam Osigwe (SAN) on a courtesy visit at the National Assembly.
He called on the NBA to strengthen its collaboration with the legislature to advance justice reforms and professional standards.
Kalu who doubles as the Chairman House Committee on Constitution Review, said that the agenda of 10th National Assembly placed the justice sector at the heart of national development.
According to him, through motions, bills and oversight, the 10th House is restoring public confidence in justice delivery.
He said that the ongoing alteration process was designed to be inclusive and evidence based.
Kalu explained that the lawmakers actively sought stakeholders input on various justice reform bills, geared toward achieving timely justice delivery, expanding court capacity, remuneration increase and improving public confidence in the judicial system.
Kalu commended the NBA for its steadfast commitment to justice, nation-building and the defence of constitutional values.
“The NBA has stood for decades as the vanguard of constitutionalism and the voice of conscience in turbulent times and we are happy for such important role.’’
Earlier, the President, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Mr, Afam Osigwe, advocated for the strengthening and upholding of the rule of law.
Osigwe called for a synergy between the parliament and the legal practitioners for a more acceptable justice delivery system.
