The presidential nod was confirmed yesterday following a high-level strategic meeting between President Tinubu and CAF President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya. The announcement, released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) through a statement signed on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, signals Nigeria’s intention to reclaim its spot as the epicenter of African football administration.
A Return to the Center Stage
Nigeria last hosted the glitzy CAF Awards on January 6, 2017, in Abuja—an event that saw Riyad Mahrez and Asisat Oshoala crowned as the continent’s best. Since then, the hosting rights have largely rotated between Egypt and Morocco, with the latter holding a three-year consecutive grip on the ceremony.
“The President and Commander-in-Chief has approved the proposed hosting of the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF, as well as this year’s CAF Awards Ceremony,” the NFF statement read. “The General Assembly is scheduled for October and will attract leading football administrators from all 54 member associations.”
