
Team Lagos on Tuesday overtook Team Edo on the medal table as the ongoing National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba enters day 5.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Team Edo had maintained early lead in the opening first four days of the games holding in Asaba, Delta.
Team Lagos leads the medal table with 20 gold, 9 silver and 7 bronze.
The Lagosians are closely followed by Team Edo with 19 gold, 6 silver, and 7 bronze medals.
Team Abia is third on the medal table with 8 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze medals, while Team Akwa Ibom is fourth on the table with 6 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Defending champion, Team Delta is occupying the fifth position on the log with 5 gold, 2 silver, and 16 bronze medals.
NAN also reports that a new national record was set in the female shooting by Team Ogun’s Atinuke Onabiiyi.
Onabiyi broke the records when she became the first athlete to shoot above 500 points, to clinched the gold medal in the female individual 10m air rifle. She registered 551 points out of 600.
In an interview with journalists, Onabiyi attributed her feat to hard work and discipline.
“My intense training, mental preparation and experience from previous competitions, all played a role in my victory today.
“Also, having a strong coach and mentor, with a supportive family helped me stay focus on my goals,” she added.
