LAGOS — The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Works, has announced the official commencement of critical maintenance and rehabilitation works along the inbound and outbound carriageways of the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, starting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The emergency repairs follow extensive technical assessments by federal engineers, which identified worn expansion joints, localized pavement distress, and damaged safety barriers along the heavily trafficked bridge axis. The Ministry of Works confirmed that the intervention is designed to prevent structural degradation, improve ride quality, and eliminate long-term safety hazards for millions of motorists traveling between Lagos and neighboring states.
To prevent total gridlock along the critical economic corridor, federal authorities and traffic management agencies—including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA)—have structured a phased traffic management plan. Motorists will be diverted into designated single lanes during non-peak hours, with heavy-duty construction shifts scheduled primarily during night windows to minimize traffic build-up during peak morning and evening travel periods.
Federal road officials have appealed to commuters, transit operators, and freight transporters for patience and cooperation during the repair duration, advising road users to strictly adhere to temporary speed limits, traffic diversions, and directional signage installed along the approach routes to ensure order and safety throughout the exercise.
