KANO — The 16th Emir of Kano and former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has cautioned prospective retail investors against liquidating essential assets, selling residential homes, or diverting children’s tuition funds to purchase shares in the newly launched Dangote Petroleum Refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO).
Speaking on Thursday, September 17, 2026, during the Dangote Refinery IPO investor roadshow in Kano, the economist and traditional ruler urged Nigerians to exercise financial discipline, adopt a long-term investment horizon, and avoid high-risk speculative behavior.
While encouraging Northern communities and union groups to embrace the capital market offer to build generational wealth, Sanusi stressed that equity participation should strictly be funded through discretionary savings rather than critical household capital.
“Do not take your children’s school fees and put them in shares; do not sell the house that you live in and put in shares,” Emir Sanusi stated. “Invest what you can afford—₦10,000, ₦20,000, ₦30,000—what you can set aside for some time. This is not about buying today and selling tomorrow for quick profits. Put it in, leave it, and watch your money grow over five years.”
