By Ayodele Quadri, Lagos Times Correspondent

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised concerns over an unsolicited credit transfer into one of his private bank accounts, putting security agencies and financial regulators on alert over a suspected breach of his confidential banking data.

The disclosure was made in an official press statement issued in Abuja on Friday, August 7, 2026, by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu.

According to the statement, the unauthorized transaction originated from an entity unknown to the former vice president, bearing the transfer narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign”. Atiku’s media team clarified that neither the former vice president nor his campaign organization solicited, authorized, or expected any campaign funding from the sender.

Key Operational Highlights

  • Unsolicited Funds Received: A credit transaction from an unidentified source was routed into Atiku’s account with the transfer description “Contribution Electioneering Campaign”.

  • Strictly Private Account: Atiku’s team emphasized that the affected account is a personal, strictly confidential bank account whose details are not in the public domain or designated for public donations.

  • Security Agencies Notified: The former vice president has formally notified law enforcement and financial intelligence bodies to track the origin of the transfer and investigate potential data privacy violations.

  • Public Concern Over Financial Privacy: The development has sparked broader concerns regarding the security of private citizen financial records, with Atiku’s team questioning how confidential banking information could be accessed and deployed without authorization.

“How Did Unknown Persons Obtain Confidential Banking Details?”

The transfer originated from a person totally unknown to His Excellency with the narration ‘Contribution Electioneering Campaign.’ Neither His Excellency nor his campaign solicited, authorised or has any knowledge of the individual or entity behind the unauthorized payment.” Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant to Atiku Abubakar

“The circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency. The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain. This raises a fundamental question: How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen? If the private banking information of a former Vice President and a leading presidential candidate can be accessed and deployed for reasons yet unknown, then no Nigerian’s financial privacy is safe.” Phrank Shaibu
