ADC Confirms Rotimi Amaechi as Atiku’s Vice-Presidential Running Mate

ABUJA — The opposition coalition has taken a definitive, institutional shape ahead of the 2027 general elections. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday formally announced the selection of the former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate. He will share the party’s presidential ticket with former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

The high-stakes announcement was made public through a state-of-the-art dispatch signed by the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, following weeks of rigorous, behind-the-scenes negotiations that extended across all six geopolitical zones.

Unveiling the “AA” Alliance

According to the statement released on the party’s official platforms, Amaechi’s emergence as the vice-presidential nominee was a direct product of the party’s internal democratic process. The former minister had emerged as the first runner-up in the ADC’s massive direct presidential primary, polling 509,397 votes behind Atiku Abubakar, who swept the primary with over 1.8 million votes from the party’s 3.1 million registered members.

“The national leadership of the African Democratic Congress is proud to announce that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the vice-presidential candidate of our great party for the 2027 presidential election,” the statement read.

The ADC narrative heavily emphasized the deep administrative track record of both candidates, positioning the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a pragmatic answer to the socio-economic vulnerabilities currently gripping the federation.

“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents far more than a conventional political marriage of convenience. It is the convergence of two tested statesmen who possess the raw administrative mileage, national reach, and legislative-executive balance required to navigate our country out of its structural challenges,” Abdullahi added.

Meeting INEC Deadlines

The timing of the announcement is highly strategic, coinciding with a strict statutory regulatory window enforced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Under the current electoral guidelines for the 2027 cycle, all registered political entities are mandated to upload their official party codes by June 26, followed by the definitive submission of names for presidential and vice-presidential candidates by July 11.

By formalizing the Amaechi pick now, the ADC has effectively preempted its major opposition rivals—including the newly formed Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) coalition featuring Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso—establishing a clear head-start ahead of the official commencement of public campaigns on August 19.
