BENIN CITY — Former Minister of Transportation and vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has pledged that an ADC-led Federal Government will complete the construction of the strategic Gelegele Seaport in Edo State alongside other stalled port projects across the country.
Speaking during an ADC political engagement in Benin City on Thursday, October 8, 2026, Amaechi emphasized that developing regional maritime infrastructure remains vital for unlocking economic growth, expanding export corridors, and decongesting traditional shipping hubs.
Highlighting his record in cabinet, the former minister noted that he oversaw the execution of the Lekki Deep Seaport project from its inception to functional completion, demonstrating his operational capacity to deliver complex infrastructure.
Amaechi explained that an initial capital outlay of $400 million to $500 million per location would be sufficient to commence phase-one construction for long-awaited maritime projects like Gelegele, with subsequent expansions funded through phased commercial development.
He assured voters and regional maritime stakeholders that the ADC administration would prioritize critical transport infrastructure, leverage viable public-private partnerships, and eliminate bureaucratic bottlenecks to ensure strategic seaports across the South-South and South-East become fully operational.
