The colloquium, themed “Nigeria’s Health at a Crossroad: Confronting Workforce Shortages, Epidemic Risks, and Maternal Mortality,” is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Old Great Hall of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, Idi-Araba, Lagos.
According to a statement by the Academy Secretary, Professor Mayowa Owolabi, the event is part of the Academy’s commitment to promoting excellence in medical education, healthcare delivery and translational research.
The keynote address will be delivered by the President of the Academy, Emeritus Professor Osato Frank Giwa-Osagie, a distinguished professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, who is expected to highlight the critical issues confronting Nigeria’s healthcare sector and propose strategies for reform.
The colloquium will also feature a panel of renowned experts, including Professor Adetokunbo Fabamwo, Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH); Professor Obinna Onwujekwe, a health economist from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Distinguished Professor Akin Osibogun of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos/Lagos University Teaching Hospital; and Dr Jide Idris, Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
The panel will provide multidisciplinary perspectives and policy recommendations on addressing workforce shortages, strengthening epidemic preparedness and reducing maternal mortality.
Founded in 2019, the Academy of Medical Sciences is Nigeria’s apex academic and scientific body in medicine. Formerly known as the Academy of Medicine Specialties of Nigeria, the organisation is a member of the InterAcademy Partnership, a global network of science academies dedicated to advancing evidence-based policy and scientific collaboration.
