LAGOS — Ikeja Electric Plc (IE), Nigeria’s largest electricity distribution company, has attributed the ongoing widespread power outages across major parts of Lagos State to a significant drop in power allocation received from the national grid.
In an official public update issued on Monday, October 5, 2026, the utility firm explained that reduced energy generation nationwide has severely constrained the megawatt capacity allocated to its network by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
The distribution company noted that the low allocation has forced it to implement emergency load management schedules across its operational undertakings, affecting residential, commercial, and industrial corridors across Ikeja, Oshodi, Shomolu, Akowonjo, Ikorodu, and Abule-Egba.
“We apologize to our valued customers for the recent drop in power supply across our network,” the company stated. “This current supply shortage is a direct result of low power allocation from the national grid, stemming from generation challenges experienced across thermal plants nationwide.”
The DisCo assured consumers that it is actively collaborating with TCN, gas suppliers, and federal power sector regulators to stabilize system frequencies, balance load distribution, and restore regular electricity supply as soon as grid generation levels rebound.
The announcement comes amid mounting public frustration from manufacturing hubs and small business owners across Lagos, who continue to face heightened operating overheads due to heavy reliance on expensive alternative power generation.
