ABUJA — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Tunji Bello, describing him as one of the most accomplished public servants of his generation and a trusted ally who “performed a miracle” in transforming waste management in Lagos State.
In a goodwill message to mark Bello’s 65th birthday on Wednesday, July 1, the President recounted their more than three decades of political association, praising the former journalist for his unwavering commitment to progressive ideals, democratic governance and public service.
Tinubu said Bello distinguished himself first as a courageous journalist who stood up to military dictatorship before moving into public administration, where he built an enviable record of diligence, competence and innovation.
“I rejoice with Tunji Bello, as my dependable friend, brother and long-standing ally in the progressive movement, attains 65,” the President said.
Reflecting on his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, Tinubu revealed that he recruited Bello from journalism into government in 2003 to tackle the state’s mounting waste management crisis.
According to him, Bello exceeded expectations by delivering sweeping reforms in record time.
“True to his reputation, Tunji performed a miracle in a record time,” Tinubu said, adding that Bello’s outstanding performance prompted successive Lagos governors to retain him as Commissioner for the Environment and later as Secretary to the State Government.
The President described Bello as a versatile administrator whose expertise spans political science, law, public administration and strategic communication.
He also commended Bello’s performance at the FCCPC, saying he was his natural choice to reposition consumer protection in line with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“Again, true to his reputation, he has not disappointed,” Tinubu said, noting that many Nigerians would attest to the impact Bello has made within two years of leading the consumer protection agency.
The President said Bello’s achievements at the FCCPC have strengthened consumer advocacy, promoted fair competition and enhanced consumer protection across the country.
“I cannot thank Tunji enough for all he has done for our country and the progressive front,” Tinubu said.
He prayed for Allah to grant Bello many more years in good health, renewed strength and continued service to Nigeria.
