President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day period of national mourning in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom.
The late leader, who served as Nigeria’s military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was 83 years old.
In a statement released by the State House, President Tinubu ordered that all national flags be flown at half-staff across the country from July 13 to July 19 as a mark of respect for the departed statesman.
“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR,” Tinubu said. “We honour his service. We reflect on his legacy. And we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul.”
Describing Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” Tinubu praised his unwavering dedication to Nigeria, his commitment to unity, and his efforts to instill discipline and fight corruption in public service. “He led with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential,” the President noted.
President Tinubu also announced that an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council would be held on Tuesday, July 15, specifically in honour of the late former president. Additionally, he assured Nigerians that the Federal Government would accord Buhari full state honours befitting his status and contributions to the country.
“I extend my deepest condolences to his beloved wife, Aisha, his children, the entire Buhari family, and all who knew and loved him,” Tinubu said. He also sent condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate.
Praying for divine mercy, Tinubu said, “May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
Details of the state burial and official ceremonies are expected to be released in the coming days.
