Nigeria Records 18.8 Million Passenger Traffic in 2025, Ranks 4th Largest Market in Africa

LAGOS — Nigeria solidifies its standing as a major continental aviation hub, processing over 18.8 million air passengers across its airport network in 2025 and clinching fourth position among Africa’s largest aviation markets.

The official performance metrics were disclosed by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, highlighting a resilient recovery and sustained growth in both domestic and international passenger movements despite broader macroeconomic headwinds.

According to data released by the airport authority, domestic operations accounted for the bulk of passenger traffic, driven by heightened mobility between major economic centers such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano. Concurrently, international passenger throughput recorded steady expansion, buoyed by increased frequency from foreign carriers and expanding route networks by local airlines entering regional and long-haul markets.

The statistical milestone places Nigeria behind only Egypt, South Africa, and Morocco in total passenger volume across the continent, underlining the country’s strategic importance in regional connectivity and trade. Aviation analysts note that the volume growth reflects expanding middle-class demand, increased corporate travel, and the gradual operational stabilization of domestic carriers following recent fleet modernizations.

Addressing airport infrastructure and capacity management, FAAN reaffirmed its ongoing focus on upgrading terminal facilities, strengthening security systems, and modernizing runway operations across key gateways like Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. The authority emphasized that continued investments in airport automation and passenger processing technologies will be crucial to absorbing anticipated growth and consolidating Nigeria’s ranking as a premier aviation hub in West Africa.
