INEC Releases Updated Voter Register, Unveils Top 10 States Ahead of 2027 General Elections

ABUJA — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disclosed that Nigeria’s national register of voters now stands at 110 million, officially consolidating the country’s position as Africa’s largest democratic electorate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a strategic briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, INEC National Chairman Joash Amupitan outlined the updated figures following the conclusion of three phases under the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise.

According to official figures released by the electoral umpire, Lagos State retains its position as the nationwide leader with over 7.48 million registered voters, followed closely by Kano and Kaduna.

  1. Lagos State: 7,488,633

  2. Kano State: 6,570,276

  3. Kaduna State: 4,662,640

  4. Katsina State: 3,876,051

  5. Rivers State: 3,736,434

  6. Oyo State: 3,588,111

  7. Delta State: 3,525,988

  8. Benue State: 3,052,225

  9. Ogun State: 3,037,981

  10. Bauchi State: 3,012,547

INEC Chairman Amupitan further announced that in strict compliance with Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2026, the updated preliminary register will be displayed across all 8,809 electoral wards nationwide from October 9 to October 15, 2026, for public scrutiny, claims, and objections.

The commission urged registered citizens, civic organizations, and political parties to actively verify their details during the display window to ensure an accurate, verified voter roll ahead of the 2027 polls.
