NNPC Extends N66 Petrol Discount to October 31, Reaffirms Subsidy Has Not Returned

ABUJA — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has extended its special N66 per litre petrol discount scheme across all NNPC Retail outlets nationwide until October 31, 2026, while explicitly denying assertions from critics that the initiative signals a secret restoration of the fuel subsidy regime.

The national oil company announced the decision on Friday, October 9, 2026, explaining that the price reduction—originally introduced on October 1 as a temporary promotional offer to mark Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary—has been extended to provide prolonged economic relief to motorists and transport operators across the country.

Rebutting political claims that the price cut functions as an unbudgeted state subsidy, NNPC management clarified that the discount is funded internally by absorbing a fraction of its corporate distribution margins and operational efficiencies rather than drawing on the federal treasury.

The oil firm reiterated that Nigeria’s downstream sector remains fully deregulated, emphasizing that market-driven pricing principles govern operations while retail subsidiaries retain commercial discretion to adjust customer margins during special promotional periods.

NNPC encouraged motorists to continue utilizing participating retail outlets and its digital service channels throughout October to benefit from the reduced pump price as part of ongoing efforts to ease transportation costs for commuters nationwide.
