President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to conduct themselves peacefully and democratically as the party begins its nationwide primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections. In a statement issued on Thursday from the State House, Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a “historic moment” for the APC, noting that the party was entering its fourth election cycle since its formation. The President said the APC was founded on the ideals of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice and selflessness, adding that those principles had helped the party survive previous election cycles and emerge stronger. “The primary elections are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party,” he said. According to the President, the primaries will begin with contests for House of Representatives aspirants and culminate in the presidential primary scheduled for May 25, 2026. Tinubu acknowledged ongoing efforts by party leaders across different levels to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, describing the approach as a commendable way of reducing internal rancour and fostering party unity. He, however, stressed that where consensus arrangements fail, party members must embrace democratic competition without violence or bitterness. “Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails, I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters,” the President stated. He warned against “do-or-die politics,” urging contestants to accept outcomes in the spirit of sportsmanship, while calling on eventual winners and party leaders to reconcile aggrieved aspirants after the exercise. “Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them,” Tinubu said. The President also charged governors, party executives and other leaders to ensure fairness and provide a level playing field for all aspirants seeking the party’s tickets. He further appealed for greater inclusion of women and youths in the party’s political process, saying the two demographics must not be relegated. “The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart,” he said, urging delegates and party leaders to give them “special consideration” during the primaries. Tinubu equally directed the Police and other security agencies to remain professional throughout the exercise and avoid interfering in the democratic process beyond maintaining law and order. “Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more,” he warned. The President wished all aspirants and party members a successful outing and expressed optimism that the APC would emerge stronger and more united ahead of the general election.
