A prominent Lagos indigene and retired General, Tajudeen Olanrewaju has strongly criticized the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, for allegedly comparing the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
NURTW is the union of commercial transporters and motor park touts, while NMA is the association to which Nigerian doctors belong. Motor park touts are better known as “Agberos” in Lagos and other South West States.
In a statement issued in Lagos on Friday, Olanrewaju, a former General Officer Commanding (GOC) Third Armored Division, Jos, said such a comparison is unedifying, repulsive , crude and tasteless.
The Deputy Governor allegedly made the comparism at a recent gathering to mark his 56th birthday.
Olanrewaju said: “It is stunning and outrageous for Hamzat to equate the Agberos who are the greatest threat to our democracy in Lagos state to professional medical doctors whose training and vision are perhaps the most significant service to mankind anywhere in the world.
“Hamzat has committed a very serious and damaging reckless dribble of the mouth against professional good men and women at this perilous time of the pandemic who are the very front -line heroes standing between us and the pandemic scourge.”
He stated further that “The very twaddle in his unguarded utterance” betrays a man “whose fixity about political power and his party militia wing as symbolized by the Agberos is apparently more important to him than the well being of Lagosians.”
He further said that “The Nigerian Medical Association should demand from him an immediate withdrawal of the jejune statement and also an apology.”
