David Mark, Aregbesola, Malami Visit Amaechi to Commiserate Over Mother’s Death

The Abuja residence of the former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has turned into a gathering point for prominent political figures following the death of his matriarch.

Leading stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the broader opposition coalition—including the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark; National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; and former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN)—paid a high-profile condolence visit to Amaechi.

The visit comes immediately after the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, paid his respects to the Amaechi family.

A High-Powered Political Condolence

The delegation arrived on Friday evening to commiserate with the former Rivers State Governor over the peaceful transition of his mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 89.

While the primary purpose of the gathering was to offer emotional and fraternal support to their political ally, the presence of the opposition’s top leadership highlighted the deep bonds within the newly realigned political bloc ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.

“Mama lived an exceptional life of dignity, leaving behind a legacy that is clearly reflected in the leadership and public service of her children. We stand with our brother, Rotimi, and the entire Amaechi family in this moment of grief.” — Senator David Mark, ADC National Chairman

Broad Frontline Support Across Camp Lines

The heavy influx of high-profile leaders highlights Amaechi’s central positioning within the country’s changing political alignment. The sequence of visits by frontline opposition figures highlights a united front during a time of personal mourning:

  • Peter Obi’s Visit: The former Anambra State governor was among the first prominent national figures to visit Amaechi, spending time with the former minister to offer prayers and words of comfort.

  • The ADC Leadership Coalition: The joint arrival of David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, and Abubakar Malami showcased deep solidarity from the core executive driving the major opposition alliance.

  • Associates and Devotees: Several former federal lawmakers, regional coordinators, and close political aides also formed part of the delegation, filling the residence to show solidarity with the family.

The Amaechi family expressed their profound gratitude to the leaders for taking the time to stand by them. As more dignitaries continue to visit the Abuja residence, the family media office has indicated that the official timelines and funeral arrangements for the late matriarch will be announced shortly after ongoing family consultations conclude.
