President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Major General Abdullahi Mohammed Adangba (rtd.), a former Chief of Staff to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
Gen. Mohammed, who died at the age of 86, played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s modern security architecture. He was instrumental in the establishment of the National Security Organisation, which eventually evolved into the State Security Service (SSS), National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA). He also served as Governor of the defunct Benue-Plateau State from 1975 to 1976.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the late senior military officer as a disciplined, loyal, and patriotic Nigerian who devoted his life to the service of the nation.
“He was a man of exemplary character, who combined the precision of a soldier with the prudence of a statesman,” Tinubu said. “His years in the State House were marked by humility, efficiency, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project.”
Tinubu noted that Gen. Mohammed brought uncommon duty, order, humility, and integrity to public service, leaving a “lasting imprint” on national institutions and the individuals he worked with, particularly during his years at the State House.
The President commiserated with the family of the deceased, the government and people of Kwara State, and the Nigerian Armed Forces, praying for the repose of his soul and comfort for those he left behind.
Gen. Mohammed is remembered as one of Nigeria’s most influential security figures, whose contributions to national intelligence and governance spanned several decades.
