AKURE, NIGERIA — The 18 local government councils in Ondo State have officially launched a social welfare initiative providing a monthly stipend of ₦20,000 to at least 5,400 elderly residents across the state.
Speaking during a press conference in Akure on Monday, August 10, 2026, the Ondo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, disclosed that each local council identified a minimum of 300 senior citizens aged 70 years and above to receive direct financial support.
The commissioner noted that the cash disbursement scheme forms part of broader grassroots development interventions directed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to alleviate poverty, enhance community welfare, and support vulnerable groups across the state.

Agricultural Support: The councils are coordinating the distribution of essential farm inputs, including cocoa seedlings, oil palm seedlings, and fertilizers, to bolster agricultural output across rural communities.

Infrastructure Monitoring: The ministry has also monitored council-led projects across the 18 LGAs, including market renovations, health center repairs, solar street lighting, water projects, and corps members’ lodges.
