Ondo LGs begin N20,000 monthly stipend for 5,400 elderly residents

AKURE, NIGERIA — The 18 local government councils in Ondo State have officially launched a social welfare initiative providing a monthly stipend of ₦20,000 to at least 5,400 elderly residents across the state.

Speaking during a press conference in Akure on Monday, August 10, 2026, the Ondo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Amidu Takuro, disclosed that each local council identified a minimum of 300 senior citizens aged 70 years and above to receive direct financial support.

The commissioner noted that the cash disbursement scheme forms part of broader grassroots development interventions directed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to alleviate poverty, enhance community welfare, and support vulnerable groups across the state.

Key Operational Highlights

  • Target Population: A minimum of 300 elderly citizens aged 70 and above per local government area, totaling 5,400 beneficiaries statewide.

  • Disbursement Amount: Each beneficiary receives a minimum of ₦20,000 monthly, with plans by the local councils to increase both the payment amount and the number of recipients in subsequent phases.

  • Youth & Women Empowerment: Beyond senior citizens, local governments are executing monthly financial support programs for youth and prioritized interventions for women to boost micro-entrepreneurship and household economic independence.

  • Agricultural Support: The councils are coordinating the distribution of essential farm inputs, including cocoa seedlings, oil palm seedlings, and fertilizers, to bolster agricultural output across rural communities.

  • Infrastructure Monitoring: The ministry has also monitored council-led projects across the 18 LGAs, including market renovations, health center repairs, solar street lighting, water projects, and corps members’ lodges.
