ABUJA / LAGOS — The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that the inaugural edition of the National Intermediate Games, originally slated to take place in Lagos State from October 1 to 15, 2026, has been officially postponed to the first quarter of 2027.
The administrative decision was formally communicated to the NSC by the Lagos State Sports Commission following a joint technical evaluation conducted alongside the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and an independent Quality Control and Assurance Specialist. The assessment—which followed a Joint Technical Meeting held from September 3 to 6, 2026—evaluated proposed sporting venues, technical requirements, rules, and operational logistics.
While the technical audit established that the competition could proceed on paper, officials concluded that the remaining weeks were insufficient to execute a maiden tournament matching Lagos State’s operational standards and the event’s national importance.
In a statement signed by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director General of the NSC, the commission explained that the postponement aims to protect the quality, credibility, and long-term viability of the Games, which are designed to serve as a talent pipeline between youth competitions and elite national sports.
Host state authorities in Lagos reaffirmed their commitment to delivering a world-class inaugural edition, confirming that facility upgrades and inter-agency preparations will continue as scheduled while the LOC finalizes exact dates for Q1 2027. Meanwhile, the NSC will proceed with pre-tournament administrative workflows, including participant accreditation and zonal elimination trials for team sports across all geopolitical zones.
