Public primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory will begin an indefinite strike on Monday following a directive by the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the union’s State Wing Executive Council held in Gwagwalada after what it described as the expiration of multiple ultimatums issued to the FCT Administration.
In a communiqué signed by the FCT NUT Chairman, Abdullahi M. Shafa, and Secretary, Margaret F. Jethro, the union directed teachers to withdraw their services and advised parents to keep their children at home.
The union expressed dissatisfaction over what it called the government’s lack of response to its demands, despite suspending a 14-week strike in 2025 and issuing a fresh ultimatum in March 2026.
It acknowledged steps taken by the FCT Minister, including implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and payment of nine months’ arrears, but said key issues remain unresolved.
Among its demands are the release and implementation of a 2025 committee report on teachers’ entitlements, removal of “vacancies” as a condition for promotions, and a review of the 2024 promotion exercise conducted by the FCT Civil Service Commission.
The union said the unresolved issues, combined with current economic conditions, make teachers’ welfare a priority for sustaining the education system in the territory.
