PORT HARCOURT — The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) chapter, has declared an indefinite, comprehensive strike action to protest persistent incomplete salary payments, unpaid promotion arrears, and non-implementation of agreed welfare allowances.
The decision was reached following an emergency Congress meeting held at the university campus on Thursday, September 17, 2026, where union members unanimously resolved to withdraw all academic services—including lectures, examinations, continuous assessments, and postgraduate supervisions—with immediate effect.
Addressing newsmen after the Congress, the branch executive committee stated that academic staff have endured months of fractional salary disbursements through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), alongside neglected earned academic allowances (EAA) and delayed promotion adjustments dating back several years.
Core Grievances & Strike Directives
-
Fractional Salary Payments: The union condemned the continued shortfall in monthly emoluments disbursed to university academics, describing the arbitrary deductions and incomplete salary runs as an insult to university autonomy and staff welfare.
-
Unpaid Promotion Arrears: ASUU highlighted that dozens of academic staff who earned promotions over the past three to four years have yet to receive their financial entitlements, leaving members financially strained amidst rising inflation.
-
Non-Implementation of 2009/2023 Agreements: The branch emphasized that federal authorities have failed to honor core renegotiated terms regarding university revitalization funding and enhanced academic salary structures.
-
Total & Indefinite Compliance: The congress mandated that no faculty, department, or institute within UNIPORT will conduct academic activities until all outstanding salary shortfalls and allowances are fully audited and remitted.
